California offers disability to coronavirus victims

The COVID-19 virus has hit California particularly hard, and that's spurring state officials to take action. Governor Gavin Newsom has stated that victims of the novel coronavirus who are unable to work due to their illness -- whether they are sick or their employers have shut down -- can obtain short-term disability benefits from the state.

The state disability benefits will cover up to 70% of the victim's wages, up to $1,300 per week.

That may not be a victim's only option, however. While many people who develop the coronavirus will recover with time, some people will undoubtedly develop complications that leave them disabled for a lengthy period of time. Some may not be able to return to work at all if they develop secondary complications while they are sick.

In the future, if you need to file a long-term disability claim with your employer, take the following steps as soon as possible:

  1. Request an application. Your employer should be able to provide you with the appropriate paperwork and all of the instructions you need. If not, your employer should provide you with the insurance company's contact information.
  2. Complete your application. Make sure that you pay special attention to all of the questions and don't leave any blanks. If your application isn't complete, it could delay your claim or cause it to be denied.
  3. Make certain that your employer provides all of their information, as required. Keep in mind that your employer cannot refuse to provide this.
  4. Ask your physician for a statement that details your condition, your medications and your prognosis.

The long-term disability application process can be complicated. If you need assistance getting your claim approved, an experienced attorney may be able to help.
