Will a spinal cord injury ever heal?

A spinal cord injury can happen in a fraction of a second. You fall from a ladder at work and strike the ground. You get into a car accident as someone else runs a red light. You take a bad hit while playing football and cannot get off the field under your own power. There are countless examples.

In that fraction of a second, your life can change forever. Depending on the location and severity of the injury, you may never walk again. You may never have function below your neck. You could need constant care for life.

Will it ever heal? Recoveries have happened. Every case is unique. That's a question for your medical team. They are the only ones who can answer it, the only ones who really know what your case looks like.

That said, experts do note that spinal cord injuries have no cure. Much of the care that you get is aimed at helping you rehab and learn to live without the skills and abilities that you used to have. Often, some functionality returns in the short-term -- as the swelling goes down and the body recovers -- but you may quickly reach a point where you have maxed out that recovery. If it's been years since the injury, the odds that you will recover further are slim.

That's why it's so important to consider all of your financial options, which may include things like long-term disability insurance. This is the very definition of a long-term ailment with no full recovery in sight. When you run into issues with the insurance company, you must know what steps to take.
