How can I cope with a long-term disability?

Being disabled in California is more than just a physical issue for most people. Long-term disabilities also cause quite a few psychological effects, and these effects can persist long after the disability becomes apparent. Coping with these effects is a must to live a happy and fulfilled life, as explained by

Set goals

It will take time to become acclimated to your new reality. In the meantime, set small goals to motivate you to recover your abilities as much as possible. Setting lofty goals and failing can actually delay your progress since you’re likely to be discouraged, and can also result in a poor mental outlook on your condition. Instead, start small to build momentum towards bigger goals to remain on the right track.

Don’t limit your happiness

It’s natural to fall into an emotional trap after becoming disabled. You may tell yourself that being as happy as you were previously is impossible. Bear in mind that many disabled people lead full and exciting lives. Don’t limit the level of happiness you’re capable of simply because of your disability. Instead, immerse in things and people you find enriching.

Seek support

A strong social network is highly beneficial when you’re in need. Make sure you maintain connections with friends and family, even if you feel like hiding away. You may also consider joining a support group for disabled individuals. These groups are great for offering an opportunity to socialize with people who are going through similar experiences. They can also introduce you to resources or coping mechanisms that you may not be fully aware of.
